In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve, also known as Old Year's Day or Saint Sylvester's Day in many countries, is the evening or the entire day of the last day of the year, 31 December. The last day of the year is commonly referred to as “New Year's Eve”. In many countries, New Year's Eve is celebrated with dancing, eating, drinking, and watching or lighting fireworks. Some Christians attend a watchnight service. The celebrations generally go on past midnight into New Year's Day, 1 January.

Why do they call it New Year's Eve?

Since the 1300s, eve has referred to the evening before an event, usually a holiday. New Year's Eve (December 31) names the day before New Year's Day (January 1), making New Year's Eve Eve the day before New Year's Eve (December 30).

Do couples kiss on New Years?

Yes,the kiss at midnight is said to strengthen that bond, which is where the superstition comes in. If a couple doesn't kiss at midnight, people believe that their bond is not as strong and could fail in the year to come.”

Popularized in the United States, give your loved one a (consensual) smooch to bring good luck in the upcoming year or strengthen an already-existing romantic relationship.

Who has new year first?

Kiritimati Island celebrates New Year's so early compared to the United States that almost a whole day will have passed before all of the mainland US will have made it to 2024.

Why is January 1st a new year?

It wasn't until Pope Gregory changed the Julian calendar to make January 1 the official start of the year that it became accepted. Furthermore, it is thought that the new year began approximately 2,000 BC, or over 4,000 years ago, in ancient Babylon
